Ibn Ishaq said: On the day of the Trench, Amr bin Abd Wudd came out and called for single combat. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), who was covered in iron, said: "O Prophet of Allah, I will face him." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is Amr; sit down." Amr called out again: "Is there no man?" He was rebuking them and saying: "Where is your Paradise which you claim that whoever of you is killed will enter it? Will no man come out to fight me?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I will face him." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sit down." Then he called out a third time and recited poetry, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up: "O Messenger of Allah, I will face him." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is Amr." He said: "Even if he is Amr." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) permission, and he walked to him and recited poetry. Amr asked: "Who are you?" He said: "I am Ali." He said: "The son of Abd Manaf?" He said: "I am Ali bin Abi Talib." He said: "O nephew, is there not someone older than you among your uncles? For I dislike shedding your blood." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "But by Allah, I do not dislike killing you." He got down in anger and drew his sword, as if it were a flame of fire, then came towards Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) in anger, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) met him with his shield. Amr struck the shield, and the sword split the shield, and the head of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was also wounded. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) struck him on the shoulder with the sword; he fell, and the dust rose up. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) heard the cry of takbir and knew that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) had killed him.
