Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that on the day of Hunayn the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever brings proof concerning a slain man that he killed him, the belongings taken from him belong to the killer." Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I was looking for a witness for the man I had killed, but I found no one to testify for me, so I sat down. Then the matter became clear to me and I mentioned it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). A man among those sitting with him said: The weapons of this slain man he is mentioning are with me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Satisfy him in this matter." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Never! He will not give it to a little weakling of Quraysh and leave aside one of the lions of Allah who fights on behalf of Allah and His Messenger. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to know, he handed that property over to me, and with it I bought a garden. It was the first property I ever acquired for myself. Abu Amr says in his narration that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and gave the property to me.
