أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ، قَالَا: ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا السَّرِيُّ بْنُ يَحْيَى، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ، ثنا رِيَاحُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو، ثنا أَيُّوبُ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ: بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ جُلُوسٌ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذْ طَلَعَ عَلَيْنَا شَابٌّ مِنَ الثَّنِيَّةِ، فَلَمَّا رَأَيْنَاهُ بِأَبْصَارِنَا قُلْنَا: لَوْ أَنَّ هَذَا الشَّابَّ جَعَلَ شَبَابَهُ وَنَشَاطَهُ وَقُوَّتَهُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ. قَالَ: فَسَمِعَ مَقَالَتَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: " وَمَا سَبِيلُ اللهِ إِلَّا مَنْ قَتَلَ؟ مَنْ سَعَى عَلَى وَالِدَيْهِ فَفِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ، وَمَنْ سَعَى عَلَى عِيَالِهِ فَفِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ، وَمَنْ سَعَى عَلَى نَفْسِهِ لِيُعِفَّهَا فَفِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ، وَمَنْ سَعَى عَلَى التَّكَاثُرِ فَهُوَ فِي سَبِيلِ الشَّيْطَانِ ".
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when suddenly a young man appeared from the hills of al-Thaniyyah. When we saw him, we said: If only this young man's youth, vigour and strength were in the path of Allah Almighty! The narrator said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) heard what we said and said: "Is being killed in the path of Allah the only 'path of Allah'? Whoever serves his parents is in His path; whoever provides for his family is in the path of Allah Almighty; whoever guards his own self to keep it chaste is also in the path of Allah Almighty; and whoever strives to amass more wealth is on the path of Satan."
