أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ الْفَقِيهُ الْأَصْبَهَانِيُّ، أَنْبَأَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْحَافِظُ، أَنْبَأَ ابْنُ مُبَشِّرٍ، ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ، ثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، أَنْبَأَ سُلَيْمَانُ التَّيْمِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِي مِجْلَزٍ، أَنّ عَلِيًّا، رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ نَهَى أَصْحَابَهُ أَنْ يَتَبَسَّطُوا عَلَى الْخَوَارِجِ حَتَّى يُحْدِثُوا حَدَثًا، فَمَرُّوا بِعَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ خَبَّابٍ فَأَخَذُوهُ فَانْطَلَقُوا بِه، فَمَرُّوا عَلَى تَمْرَةٍ سَاقِطَةٍ مِنْ نَخْلَةِ فَأَخَذَهَا بَعْضُهُمْ فَأَلْقَاهَا فِي فَمِهِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ بَعْضُهُمْ: تَمْرَةُ مُعَاهَدٍ فَبِمَ اسْتَحْلَلْتَهَا؟ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ خَبَّابٍ: أَفَلَا أَدُلُّكُمْ عَلَى مَنْ هُوَ أَعْظَمُ حُرْمَةً عَلَيْكُمْ مِنْ هَذَا؟ قَالُوا: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: أَنَا، فَقَتَلُوهُ. فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِمْ أَنْ أَقِيدُونَا بِعَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ خَبَّابٍ، قَالُوا: كَيْفَ نُقِيدُكَ بِهِ وَكُلُّنَا قَتَلَهُ؟ قَالَ: وَكُلُّكُمْ قَتَلَهُ؟ قَالُوا: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، ثُمَّ أَمَرَ أَنْ يَبْسُطُوا عَلَيْهِمْ، وَقَالَ: وَاللهِ لَا يُقْتَلُ مِنْكُمْ عَشْرَةٌ، وَلَا يَفْلِتُ مِنْهُمْ عَشْرَةٌ، قَالَ: فَقَتَلُوهُمْ، قَالَ: فَقَالَ: اطْلُبُوا فِيهِمْ ذَا الثُّدَيَّةِ قَالَ: وَذَكَرَ بَاقِيَ الْحَدِيثِ.
Abu Mijlaz relates that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) had forbidden his companions to attack the Khawarij until some (hostile act) came from them. Then they (the Khawarij) passed by Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him), seized him and went off with him, until they passed by some fallen dates; some of them picked (the dates) up and put them in their mouths, whereupon others said: These are the dates of the dhimmis (non-Muslims under covenant); how are they lawful? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Shall I not direct you to something of even greater sanctity than this? They said: Yes! (When he mentioned the sanctity of his own life,) they killed him. When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) learned of this, he said to those people: Give retaliation (qisas) for Abdullah. They said: All of us killed him; how can we give retaliation? He (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Did all of you kill him? They said: Yes! So Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said 'Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest), ordered an attack and said: By Allah, not ten of you will be killed, and not ten of them will escape. The narrator said: Then they killed them. And he (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Look among them for the man with the breast-like hand (al-Mukhdaj). Then he narrated the complete hadith.
