أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ بِشْرَانَ، وَأَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ السُّكَّرِيُّ بِبَغْدَادَ، قَالَا: ثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الصَّفَّارُ، ثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ الرَّمَادِيُّ، ثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أَنْبَأَ عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ أَبِي سُلَيْمَانَ، ثَنَا سَلَمَةُ بْنُ كُهَيْلٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي زَيْدُ بْنُ وَهْبٍ الْجُهَنِيُّ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ فِي الْجَيْشِ الَّذِينَ كَانُوا مَعَ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، الَّذِينَ سَارُوا إِلَى الْخَوَارِجِ، فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ: أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: " يَخْرُجُ مِنْ أُمَّتِي قَوْمٌ يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ، لَيْسَتْ قِرَاءَتُكُمْ إِلَى قِرَاءَتِهِمْ بِشَيْءٍ، وَلَا صَلَاتُكُمْ إِلَى صَلَاتِهِمْ بِشَيْءٍ، وَلَا صِيَامُكُمْ إِلَى صِيَامِهِمْ بِشَيْءٍ، يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لَا تُجَاوِزُ صَلَاتُهُمْ تَرَاقِيَهُمْ، يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الْإِسْلَامِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ، لَوْ يَعْلَمُ الْجَيْشُ الَّذِينَ يُصِيبُونَهُمْ مَا قَضَى اللهُ لَهُمْ عَلَى لِسَانِ نَبِيِّهِمْ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَاتَّكَلُوا عَنِ الْعَمَلِ، وَآيَةُ ذَلِكَ أَنَّ فِيهِمْ رَجُلًا لَهُ عَضُدٌ، وَلَيْسَتْ لَهُ ذِرَاعٌ، عَلَى عَضُدِهِ مِثْلُ حَلَمَةِ ثَدْيِ الْمَرْأَةِ، عَلَيْهِ شَعَرَاتٌ بِيضٌ "، فَتَذْهَبُونَ إِلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ وَأَهْلِ الشَّامِ وَتَتْرُكُونَ هَؤُلَاءِ يَخْلُفُونَكُمْ فِي ذَرَارِيِّكُمْ وَأَمْوَالِكُمْ، وَاللهِ إِنِّي لَأَرْجُو أَنْ يَكُونُوا هَؤُلَاءِ الْقَوْمَ، فَإِنَّهُمْ قَدْ سَفَكُوا الدَّمَ، وَأَغَارُوا فِي سَرْحِ النَّاسِ، فَسِيرُوا عَلَى اسْمِ اللهِ "، قَالَ سَلَمَةُ: فَنَزَّلَنِي زَيْدُ بْنُ وَهْبٍ مَنْزِلًا مَنْزِلًا، حَتَّى قَالَ: مَرَرْنَا عَلَى قَنْطَرَةٍ، قَالَ: فَلَمَّا الْتَقَيْنَا وَعَلَى الْخَوَارِجِ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ الرَّاسِبِيُّ، فَقَالَ لَهُمْ: أَلْقُوا الرِّمَاحِ، وَسُلُّوا سُيُوفَكُمْ مِنْ جُفُونِهَا، فَإِنِّي أَخَافُ أَنْ يُنَاشِدُوكُمْ كَمَا نَاشَدُوكُمْ يَوْمَ حَرُورَا فَرَجَعْتُمْ، قَالَ: فَوَحَّشُوا بِرِمَاحِهِمْ، وَسَلُّوا السُّيُوفَ، وَشَجَرَهُمُ النَّاسُ بِرِمَاحِهِمْ، قَالَ: فَقُتِلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ، وَمَا أُصِيبَ مِنَ النَّاسِ يَوْمَئِذٍ إِلَّا رَجُلَانِ، فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ: الْتَمِسُوا فِيهُمُ الْمُخْدَجَ، فَلَمْ يَجِدُوهُ، فَقَامَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ بِنَفْسِهِ فَالْتَمَسَهُ فَوَجَدَهُ، فَقَالَ: صَدَقَ اللهُ، وَبَلَّغَ رَسُولُهُ، فَقَامَ إِلَيْهِ عُبَيْدَةُ السَّلْمَانِيُّ، فَقَالَ: يَا أَمِيرَ ⦗٢٩٦⦘ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ آللَّهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ لَسَمِعْتَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟ قَالَ: إِيْ وَاللهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ، حَتَّى اسْتَحْلَفَهُ ثَلَاثًا وَهُوَ يَحْلِفُ لَهُ. رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ عَبْدِ بْنِ حُمَيْدٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّزَّاقِ.
Zayd bin Wahb al-Juhani, who was in the army with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that marched against the Khawarij, says that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O people, I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'A people will emerge from my Ummah who will recite the Qur'an; your recitation will be nothing compared to their recitation, your prayer nothing compared to their prayer, and your fasting nothing compared to their fasting. They will recite the Qur'an, but their prayer will not go beyond their collarbones. They will pass out of Islam as an arrow passes out of the game. If the army that strikes them knew what Allah has decreed for them on the tongue of their Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), they would rely on that and abandon (other) deeds. Their sign is that among them will be a man who has an upper arm but no forearm; on his upper arm will be something like the nipple of a woman's breast, with white hairs on it.'" Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Will you go to Mu'awiyah and the people of Syria and leave these people behind you among your children and your wealth? By Allah, I hope that these are those people, for they have shed blood and raided the people's grazing herds; so march in the name of Allah."
Salamah says: Zayd bin Wahb took me through their journey stage by stage until he said: We crossed a bridge. When we met them, the leader of the Khawarij that day was Abdullah bin Wahb al-Rasibi. He said to them: Throw away your spears and draw your swords from their sheaths, for I fear they will appeal to you by Allah as they appealed to you on the day of Harura', and you went back. So they threw their spears far away and drew their swords, and the people thrust at them with their spears, and they were killed one on top of another; and of the people (of Ali's army) only two men were killed that day. Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Search among them for the man with the deficient arm." They searched but did not find him. Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) himself went and searched and found him, and he (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Allah has spoken the truth, and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) has conveyed (the truth)." At this Ubaydah al-Salmani (may Allah have mercy on him) stood up and said: "O Commander of the Believers, by Allah, besides whom there is no god, did you really hear this hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Yes, by Allah, besides whom there is no god," until he had asked him to swear three times, and he swore to him each time.
