Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) says that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) sent some gold mixed with its soil to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed it among four people: al-Aqra' bin Habis al-Hanzali al-Mujashi'i, Uyaynah bin Badr al-Fazari, Zayd al-Khayl, and Alqamah bin Ulathah al-Amiri. Quraysh and the Ansar became angry, saying: He has given to the chiefs of the people of Najd and left us out. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have only done it to win their hearts." Then a man with sunken eyes, prominent cheeks, a protruding forehead, a thick beard and a shaven head said: O Muhammad, fear Allah! So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who would obey Allah if I disobeyed Him? Allah has entrusted me over the people of the earth, yet you do not trust me?" Then a man (probably Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him)) asked: Shall I kill him? But he (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped him. When that man had gone, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "From the offspring of this man there will be a people who recite the Qur'an, but it will not go beyond their throats. They will pass out of Islam as an arrow passes out of the bow. They will kill the people of Islam and leave the idol-worshippers alone. If I were to find them, I would kill them as the people of Ad were killed."
