Abdur-Rahman bin Abd Rabb al-Ka'bah narrates from Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both): I was sitting with him in the shade of the Ka'bah while he was narrating to the people, saying: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey. We stopped at a place; some of us began pitching tents, some grazing the animals, and some practising archery, when the caller called out: 'As-salatu jami'ah' (Gather for the prayer). He says: When I reached there, he (peace and blessings be upon him) was addressing the people: "O people, every prophet before me had the duty to guide his people to what he knew was good for them and to warn them of what he knew was evil for them. Beware! The well-being of this Ummah is in its beginning, and its end will be afflicted with trials and tribulations. A tribulation will come, and the believer will say: This will destroy me; then it will pass. Another will come and he will say: This one, this one; then that too will pass. A third will come and he will say: This one, this one; and that too will pass. So whoever loves to be moved away from the Fire and admitted into Paradise, let his death come to him while he believes in Allah and the Last Day, and let him treat people as he would love to be treated. And whoever pledges allegiance to a ruler (imam), giving him the clasp of his hand and the fruit of his heart, let him obey him as far as he is able. If anyone comes to dispute with him, strike the neck of the other one." When I heard this from him, I put my head between two men and said: Your cousin Mu'awiyah tells us to kill one another and to consume our wealth among ourselves unjustly, whereas Allah says: "And do not kill yourselves" [Surah al-Nisa: 29] and "And do not consume one another's wealth unjustly" [Surah al-Baqarah: 188]. So he placed his hand on his forehead, then lowered it, raised his head and said: Obey him in obedience to Allah, and disobey him in disobedience to Allah. I said: Did you hear this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: Yes, my ears heard it and my heart retained it.
