Abu al-Malih al-Hudhali narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Haml bin Malik bin al-Nabighah (may Allah be pleased with him) married two women, one of them from Banu Mu'awiyah and the other from Banu Lihyan. The woman from Banu Lihyan was struck; she died and her child also miscarried. So Haml bin Malik came to her father and demanded the blood money for his wife and child. Her father said: "Only her sons will pay her blood money, and they are the chiefs of Banu Lihyan." The dispute was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The paternal kin are to pay the blood money, and for the miscarried child a male or female slave." The guardian said: "How can there be blood money for one who was not born and did not cry out?" So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Is this rhymed speech like the rhyming of the Jahiliyyah?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) was told that he was a poet. He said: "O Messenger of Allah, they have neither a male slave nor a female slave." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then ten camels." He said: "He has nothing at all, unless the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) helps him with it from the sadaqah of Banu Lihyan." So he helped him with it, and Haml went about collecting it until he had received it in full.
