Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) ruled one camel for a molar, and Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) ruled five camels. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) set the diyah lower and Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) set it higher. Had it been me, I would have set two camels for each. Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: You have contradicted the hadith of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and you say that for a molar there are five camels; this is also what has come from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "For a tooth there are five," and a molar is also a tooth.
The Shaykh said: It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that all teeth are equal, and al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) also reported from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that teeth, whether front teeth or molars, are all equal.
