Imran bin Kathir al-Nakha'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Ubaydullah bin al-Hurr married a young woman of his tribe called al-Darda', whose father had given her to him in marriage. Then Ubaydullah went off and joined Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) and remained absent from his wife for a long time. The young woman's father died, and her family married her to a man from among them called Ikrimah. When Ubaydullah learned of this, he came and took the dispute with them to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) returned the woman to him; she was pregnant by Ikrimah, so he placed her in the custody of a trustworthy person. The woman said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "Am I more entitled to my wealth, or Ubaydullah bin al-Hurr?" He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Rather, you are more entitled to it." She said: "I make you a witness that whatever of my dowry (mahr) was owed to me by Ikrimah is his." When she delivered what was in her womb, he returned her to Ubaydullah bin al-Hurr, and the child was attached to its father.
