Yusuf bin Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Khuwaylah bint Tha'labah (may Allah be pleased with her), who was married to Aws bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him), the brother of Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him), narrated to me that Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) came home and some words were exchanged, which annoyed him. I answered back, and in anger he said: "You are to me like my mother." Then he went to the gathering of his people. When he came back, he tried to get me to give myself to him, but I refused. He was rough with me and I resisted him hard, and I overpowered him in the struggle, the way women overpower a weak man. She said: I said: "By the One in whose hand is Khuwaylah's soul, you cannot come near me until Allah judges concerning me and you." I came and complained to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your husband is your cousin (your paternal uncle's son); fear Allah and treat him well." She said: I had not yet left when Allah Almighty revealed these verses: "Allah has indeed heard the statement of the one who argues with you concerning her husband" [Surah al-Mujadilah: 1]. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell him to free a neck (slave)." Khawlah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: By Allah! He does not own any neck at all. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let him fast two consecutive months." I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! He is an old man; where would he get the strength to fast? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let him feed sixty poor people." I said: O Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! He has nothing to feed them with. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We will help him with an 'araq (basket)."
An 'araq is a basket that holds thirty sa' of dates. She said: I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I too will help him with a basket. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have done well; tell him to give it in charity."
