Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Thabit al-Ahnaf (may Allah have mercy on him) that he married the umm walad (slave-mother) of Abd al-Rahman bin Zayd bin al-Khattab. He said: Abdullah bin Abd al-Rahman summoned me. When I came to him, there were whips laid out before him and an iron shackle, and he had two slaves seated there. He said: "Divorce her, or else!" And he swore an oath, saying: "I will do such-and-such to you." He said: I said: "A thousand divorces." I left him and found Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) on the road to Makkah. I told him my situation, and Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) became angry and said: "This is no divorce. Your wife has not become forbidden to you; go back to your family." He said: My heart was not at rest until I came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him), who was in Makkah at that time. I told him my situation, and he said the same as Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: "She is not forbidden to you; go back to your wife." And he wrote to Jabir bin al-Aswad al-Zuhri (who was the governor of Madinah) that he should punish Abdullah bin Abd al-Rahman and that he should not stand between me and my wife. When I arrived, Safiyyah bint Abi Ubayd (that is, the wife of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)) prepared my wife and brought her in to me with the knowledge of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Then I invited Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) to my wedding feast as well.
