Bayhaqi 14997 — One who said "divorced" meaning something other

Abu Ubayd said concerning the hadith of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man was brought to him whose wife had said to him: Compare me to something. He said: You are like a gazelle; you are like a dove. The woman said: I will not be satisfied until you say: 'khaliyyah taliq' (this is an indirect expression for divorce: if divorce is intended, divorce takes effect, otherwise not). The man said these words, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Take her by the hand; she is your wife.
Abu Ubayd said: By 'khaliyyah taliq' is meant the she-camel that had been tied and was then untied; at that time it is said 'khaliyyah min al-'iqal' (freed from the tether), meaning she has been let loose. The man intended this, so Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) set aside the divorce on account of his intention; and whoever utters a word resembling the word of divorce but does not intend divorce, divorce does not take effect.
The Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This man neither divorced his wife nor addressed her with these words in a way that divorce would fall upon her; because of this possibility, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) set the divorce aside.
