Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated the hadith of al-A'raj from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), as has already passed, and then said: We also adopt this view; it is also the view of all the muftis, and there is no disagreement among them. It is established only as the narration of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and according to the hadith scholars it is not established through any other chain. This is a proof against whoever rejected the hadith, and also against whoever sometimes takes a hadith and sometimes leaves it.
Al-Shafi'i spoke at length on this and did excellently. What he mentioned, that it is narrated through people other than Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), is as he said: it is narrated from Ali, Abdullah bin Mas'ud, Abdullah bin Umar, Abdullah bin Abbas, Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As, Abu Sa'id al-Khudri and Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with them all), and among the women from Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), all of them from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). However, none of these narrations meets the condition of the two authors of the Sahih, al-Bukhari and Muslim; they, and the hadith imams before and after them, agreed on establishing only the hadith of Abu Hurayrah in this chapter, as al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said. Al-Bukhari did record the narration of Asim al-Ahwal from al-Sha'bi from Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both), but they consider it a mistake, and that the correct version is the narration of Dawud bin Abi Hind and Abdullah bin Awn from al-Sha'bi from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him). And Allah knows best.
