أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدَانَ، أنبأ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الصَّفَّارُ، ثنا ابْنُ مِلْحَانَ، ثنا يَحْيَى، حَدَّثَنِي اللَّيْثُ، عَنْ عُقَيْلٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي أَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ كَانَ ابْنَ عَشْرِ سِنِينَ مَقْدِمَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَدِينَةَ قَالَ: وَكَانَ أُمَّهَاتِي يُوَاظِبْنَنِي عَلَى خِدْمَةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَخَدَمْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَشْرَ سِنِينَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ، وَتُوُفِّيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَنَا ابْنُ عِشْرِينَ سَنَةً، فَكُنْتُ أَعْلَمُ النَّاسِ بِشَأْنِ الْحِجَابِ حِينَ أُنْزِلَ، وَكَانَ أَوَّلُ مَا أُنْزِلَ فِيهِ أُنْزِلَ فِي مُبْتَنَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِزَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ جَحْشٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا، فَأَصْبَحَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَرُوسًا بِهَا، فَدَعَا الْقَوْمَ، فَأَصَابُوا مِنَ الطَّعَامِ، ثُمَّ خَرَجُوا، ثُمَّ بَقِيَ رَهْطٌ مِنْهُمْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَطَالُوا الْمُكْثَ، فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَخَرَجَ وَخَرَجْتُ مَعَهُ لِكَيْ يَخْرُجُوا، فَمَشَى رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَمَشَيْتُ مَعَهُ حَتَّى جَاءَ عَتَبَةَ حُجْرَةِ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا، ثُمَّ ظَنَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُمْ قَدْ خَرَجُوا، فَرَجَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَرَجَعْتُ مَعَهُ حَتَّى دَخَلَ عَلَى زَيْنَبَ، فَإِذَا هُمْ جُلُوسٌ لَمْ يَقُومُوا، فَرَجَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَرَجَعْتُ مَعَهُ، حَتَّى إِذَا بَلَغَ حُجْرَةَ عَائِشَةَ، فَظَنَّ أَنْ قَدْ خَرَجُوا، فَرَجَعَ وَرَجَعْتُ مَعَهُ، فَإِذَا هُمْ خَرَجُوا، فَضَرَبَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهُ الْحِجَابَ، وَأُنْزِلَ الْحِجَابُ " رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ بُكَيْرٍ، وَأَخْرَجَاهُ مِنْ حَدِيثِ صَالِحِ بْنِ كَيْسَانَ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ.
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "I was ten years old when he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah, and my mother used to urge me to serve him (peace and blessings be upon him). I served him (peace and blessings be upon him) for ten years in Madinah, and when he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away I was twenty years old. I know better than the people when the verse of hijab was revealed. The first verse revealed about it was when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) married Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her). He (peace and blessings be upon him) began the morning in the state of being about to marry her, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) invited the people to a meal. They came to eat; then some left, and some stayed on for a long time. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out, and I went out with him so that those people would also leave. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) walked, and I walked with him until they reached the room of Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) thought that they would have left, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) came back, and I came back with him, until he went in to Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her), and those people were still sitting; they had not gone. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned back, and I turned back with him (peace and blessings be upon him), until he (peace and blessings be upon him) reached the room of Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). He (peace and blessings be upon him) thought that perhaps they had left, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) returned and I returned with him (peace and blessings be upon him), and they had gone. He (peace and blessings be upon him) drew a curtain between me and himself, and then the verse of hijab was revealed."
