أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أنبأ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ كَامِلٍ الْقَاضِي، أنبأ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَعْدِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَطِيَّةَ الْعَوْفِيُّ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، حَدَّثَنِي عَمِّي، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا، قَوْلَهُ تَعَالَى: {وَمِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَتَهَجَّدْ بِهِ نَافِلَةً لَكَ} [الإسراء: ٧٩]، يَعْنِي " بِالنَّافِلَةِ أَنَّهَا لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَاصَّةً أُمِرَ بِقِيَامِ اللَّيْلِ وَلَبِثَ عَلَيْهِ ".
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Allah Almighty said: "So perform tahajjud with it as an extra (nafilah) for you." [Surah al-Isra: 79] That is, voluntary prayer: standing in prayer at night (qiyam al-layl) was made specific to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and it is obligatory on him.
