Ghalib al-Qattan heard from a man, who heard from his father, who heard from his grandfather, that some people lived at one of the watering places of the Arabs. When the news of the religion of Islam reached them, the owner of the water gave his people a hundred camels on condition that they accept Islam; so they accepted Islam, and he distributed the camels among them. After that he wished to take his camels back, so he called his son and sent him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: Go to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and say: My father sends you greetings of peace; he had promised his people a hundred camels on condition that they accept Islam. They accepted Islam and my father distributed the camels among them. Now he wishes to take his camels back from them; may he take them back or not? Whatever you say, yes or no. Then he said: My father is old and he is the overseer ('arif) of this water, and he wishes that after him you make me the overseer there. So, having heard this, the son came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! My father sends you greetings of peace. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Wa alayka wa ala abika as-salam" (And upon you and upon your father be peace). Then he said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! My father promised my people a hundred camels on condition that they accept Islam, and they accepted Islam, and in a good manner. Now my father wishes to take those camels back from them; is my father more entitled to them, or are they? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If your father wishes, let him give them to them; and if he wishes to take them back, he is more entitled to them. As for those who accepted Islam, they will have the benefit of their Islam; and if they do not accept Islam, they will be fought over Islam." Then he said: My father is old and he is the overseer of this water, and he wishes that after him you give the office of overseer to me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The office of overseer is certainly a reality, and it is necessary for people too, but the overseers will go to Hell."
