أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ بَالَوَيْهِ، ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ شَبِيبٍ الْمَعْمَرِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ ذَكْوَانَ، وَمَحْمُودُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ الدِّمَشْقِيَّانِ، قَالَا: ثنا مَرْوَانُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ حَمْزَةَ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا وَهْبٍ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ مَكْحُولًا يَقُولُ: كُنْتُ عَبْدًا بِمِصْرَ لِامْرَأَةٍ مِنْ هُذَيْلٍ، فَأَعْتَقَتْنِي، فَمَا خَرَجْتُ مِنْ مِصْرَ وَبِهَا عِلْمٌ إِلَّا حَوَيْتُ عَلَيْهِ فِيمَا أَرَى، ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُ الشَّامَ فَغَرْبَلْتُهَا، كُلَّ ذَلِكَ أَسْأَلُ عَنِ النَّفْلِ، فَلَمْ أَجِدْ أَحَدًا يُخْبِرُنِي فِيهِ بِشَيْءٍ، حَتَّى لَقِيتُ شَيْخًا يُقَالُ لَهُ: زِيَادُ بْنُ جَارِيَةَ التَّمِيمِيُّ، فَقُلْتُ لَهُ: هَلْ سَمِعْتَ فِي النَّفْلِ شَيْئًا؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، سَمِعْتُ حَبِيبَ بْنَ مَسْلَمَةَ الْفِهْرِيَّ يَقُولُ: شَهِدْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " نَفَّلَ الرُّبُعَ فِي الْبَدَاءَةِ، وَالثُّلُثَ فِي الرَّجْعَةِ " أَخْرَجَهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ فِي السُّنَنِ عَنْهُمَا.
Makhul (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I was a slave in Egypt belonging to a woman of Hudhayl, and she freed me. I did not leave Egypt until I had acquired its knowledge; then I came to Syria.
Then I asked about the spoils (nafl), but I found no one who could tell me anything about it, until I met Shaykh Ziyad bin Jariyah (may Allah have mercy on him). I said to him: Have you heard anything about the spoils (nafl)? He said: Yes, I heard Habib bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) say: I was present with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he (peace and blessings be upon him) "gave a quarter at the beginning (of the expedition) and a third on the return."
