Bayhaqi 11986 — Umra (a lifetime gift)

Ibn Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) says: A man gave another man a house as an 'umra for his lifetime. After that they took their dispute about it to Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him), and the one who had been given the house was blind. Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him) ruled in his favour and said: Whoever is made owner of something for his lifetime, it is his in his life and after his death. The blind man said: O Abu Umayyah, how did you rule for me? He said: It was not I who ruled; rather Allah Almighty ruled on the tongue of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fifty years ago: "Whoever is made owner of something for his lifetime, it is his even after his death, and it belongs to his heirs."
