Asim bin Bahdalah says that they all gathered with al-Hajjaj. Al-Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) was mentioned, and al-Hajjaj said: He is not of the progeny of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Yahya bin Ya'mar was also present; he said to al-Hajjaj: O Amir! You have lied. Al-Hajjaj said: Bring proof from the Book of Allah for the truth of what you have said, or else I will kill you. Yahya said: "And of his progeny are Dawud, Sulayman, Ayyub, Yusuf, Musa and Harun" [Surah al-An'am: 84] up to His saying: "and Zakariyya, Yahya and Isa" [Surah al-An'am: 85]. Allah Almighty has informed that Isa is of the progeny of Adam through his mother, and al-Husayn bin Ali is of the progeny of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) through his mother (Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her). Al-Hajjaj said: You have spoken the truth; but what prompted you to contradict me in my gathering? Yahya said: What prompted me is the covenant that Allah took from the prophets: "You must make it clear to the people and not conceal it." [Surah Al Imran: 187] "But they threw it behind their backs and sold it for a small price." So al-Hajjaj banished Yahya to Khurasan.
