Bayhaqi 11479 — A loaned item is liable to compensation

Ata bin Abi Rabah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from some of the descendants of Safwan bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that they said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) borrowed weapons from Safwan bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him). Safwan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: As a loan or by force? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "As a loan." He gave between thirty and forty coats of mail. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fought the Battle of Hunayn, and when Allah defeated the polytheists, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Gather Safwan's coats of mail." The Companions found some coats of mail missing, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Safwan (may Allah be pleased with him): "If you wish, we will compensate you." He said: O Messenger of Allah! What is in my heart today (faith) was not there that day.
