It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) that he asked for water in Mada'in, and a village chief (dihqan) brought him a silver vessel; he flung it aside. The narrator says that Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) was a man of sharp temper. He said: I apologise to you for this; I had already warned him (against it) beforehand. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood among us and forbade us to drink from vessels of gold and silver, and forbade us to wear silk, whether thick or fine, and he said: "It is for them (the disbelievers) in this world and for you in the Hereafter."
