Sunan ad-Daraqutni 1088 — on who is suitable to stand behind the imam
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ رَاشِدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو السَّدُوسِيُّ ، ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْمَدَنِيُّ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " اثْنَانِ فَمَا فَوْقَهُمَا جَمَاعَةٌ " .
Amr bin Shu'aib narrates from his father, from his grandfather: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Two people or more constitute a congregation (i.e., they should perform the prayer in congregation)."
