بَابُ الِاجْتِهَادِ فِي الْقِبْلَةِ وَجَوَازِ التَّحَرِّي فِي ذَلِكَ
Chapter on striving to find the Qiblah and the permissibility of making an educated guess
Sunan ad-Daraqutni 1066 — on striving to find the Qiblah
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ صَاعِدٍ ، ثنا يُوسُفُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، وَعَلِيُّ بْنُ أَشْكَابَ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، ثنا يُوسُفُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، قَالا : نا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ ، أنا أَشْعَثُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ أَبُو الرَّبِيعِ السَّمَّانُ بِهَذَا ، وَقَالَ : " فَجَعَلَ كُلُّ رَجُلٍ مِنَّا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ أَحْجَارًا يُصَلِّي إِلَيْهَا ، فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحْنَا إِذَا نَحْنُ إِلَى غَيْرِ الْقِبْلَةِ " فَذَكَرْنَا ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، مِثْلَهُ .
The same narration is transmitted with another chain, however, in it are these words: Each one of us performed the prayer facing the stones that were in front of him, and when morning came, our faces were not towards the qiblah. We mentioned this to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). (After this, the hadith continues as previously mentioned.)
