Shu’bi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The first grandfather to inherit in Islam was Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him); he took his share, so Sayyiduna ‘Ali and Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with them both) came to him and said: Not like this, you are like two brothers.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2947)
If a deceased person leaves behind a grandfather and brothers, then according to Sayyiduna Umar, Sayyiduna Abdullah, and Sayyiduna Zaid radi Allahu anhum, the grandfather receives one-third, and the remaining two-thirds are for the brothers. According to Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu, the grandfather receives one-sixth, and the remaining five-sixths are for the brothers.
