Hadith 2928

Shu'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say regarding a daughter, several granddaughters, and a grandson, that if their share in the division was less than one-sixth, he would still give them one-sixth, and if it was more than one-sixth, he would still give them one-sixth.

Daughter: half 3
Grandson: two shares
Granddaughter: share of one-sixth

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2927)

Ibn Abi Shaybah has narrated this issue in more detail in [ابن أبى شيبه 11132], that Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu used to give the daughter half, and to the granddaughter (paternal) after the grandsons, if more than one-sixth (sudus) remained, he would give her more than one-sixth, and if less than one-sixth remained for her, he would divide in such a way that the granddaughter would not be harmed.

And the decision of other noble Companions (Sahabah kiram) in this issue was that half would be given to the daughter, and whatever remained would be given to the grandson and granddaughter according to the principle "for the male, a portion equal to that of two females" (lil-dhakari mithlu hazzil-unthayayn), i.e., the grandson would get two shares and the granddaughter one share, that is, one-sixth.

The original issue out of 6 would be as follows:
Daughter . . . . half . . . . 3
Grandson . . . . two shares . . . . 2
Granddaughter . . . . one share . . . . one-sixth (1)
