Hadith 2674

The blessed wife of the Prophet (peace be upon him), Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "O Aish! This is Jibreel (peace be upon him) who is conveying greetings of peace to you." Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "And peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon him."
She said: And the Prophet (peace be upon him) was seeing what I was not seeing (i.e., Jibreel, peace be upon him).

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2673)

From this hadith, it is established that a non-mahram man may greet a non-mahram woman with salam, and that the woman may reply to him. Furthermore, it is shown that her reply should not be "Wa alaikum as-salam" but rather "Wa alayhi as-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu."

This hadith also establishes the virtue of Sayyidah Aisha radi Allahu anha, that the Holy Spirit (Ruh al-Qudus) conveys salam to her. It also demonstrates the excellent conduct and kindness of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam towards his wife, and that in affection and endearment, a husband may call his wife by a loving nickname, as the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "O Aish!"—he did not say "Aisha." «﴿لَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللّٰهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ﴾ [الأحزاب : 21]» Translation: "Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example."
