Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: On the day of Khaybar, a container of fat was thrown, I came and snatched it and said: Today I will not give anyone anything from it. When I looked back, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was smiling. Imam Darimi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It is hoped that Humaid (bin Hilal) heard this from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him).

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2535)
The majority of scholars have given the verdict that only minor items of food and drink may be taken and consumed by those who acquire war booty before its distribution. Similarly, fodder may also be given to their animals.
The fact that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) smiled and did not prevent them from taking possession of that basket is evidence that items of food and drink may be taken before distribution.
