According to this hadith, it is not permissible to seek assistance from a polytheist (mushrik) in jihad. It is narrated in Sahih Muslim that when a polytheist intended to participate in jihad with the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "Go back, I do not seek help from a polytheist." When that person embraced Islam, then the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam accepted his assistance. However, according to some scholars, it is permissible to seek help from polytheists in times of necessity. It is mentioned in the books of seerah that in the Battle of Uhud, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam took assistance from a polytheist named Ferman, and he killed three polytheists who were standard-bearers. Likewise, in Khaybar and Hunayn, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam also took assistance from non-Muslims and hypocrites. Therefore, in times of necessity, it is permissible to seek their help. And Allah knows best.
