Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) about giving the option of divorce, so she replied: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave us the option, so did merely giving the option become a divorce?

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2305)
From this hadith, it is understood that a woman has the choice: if she wishes, she may stay with her husband, and if she wishes, she may return to her parental home. If she chooses to remain with her husband, then divorce does not take effect.
Its details can be seen under the discussion of Surah Al-Ahzab, verse: «﴿يَاأَيُّهَاالنَّبِيُّقُلْلِأَزْوَاجِكَإِنْكُنْتُنَّتُرِدْنَالْحَيَاةَالدُّنْيَا .....﴾ [الأحزاب : 28]».
