Sunan ad-Darimi 223 — Dislike of Relying on Personal Opinion

أَخْبَرَنَا أَخْبَرَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ خَالِدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ، عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ عُمَارَةَ، وَمَالِكِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ: "الْقَصْدُ فِي السُّنَّةِ خَيْرٌ مِنْ الِاجْتِهَادِ فِي الْبِدْعَةِ".

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Moderation in the Sunnah is better than striving hard in innovation.

From all these traditions and hadiths, it is established that: One must adhere firmly to the Sunnah, and avoid innovation (bid‘ah), the innovator (mubtadi‘), as well as speculation and analogical reasoning (qiyas).
