Hadith 1993

Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me goats (for sacrifice) to distribute among the companions, so I distributed them. Among them, one kid less than a year old remained. I mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so he said: "Sacrifice this one as well." Imam Darimi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: «عتود» refers to a kid goat.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 1991 to 1993)

For sacrifice (qurbani), the goat should be adult (musinnah), and it is not permissible to sacrifice a young kid. In the first hadith, the word "jadh‘" is used, which is explained by "‘atud." From this, it is understood that the kid of a goat should be one year old, because in authentic narrations it is mentioned that this ruling was only for Sayyiduna ‘Uqbah radi Allahu anhu.

In Arabic, "jadh‘" refers to an animal that has become mature and strong; thus, a five-year-old camel is called "jadh‘." For cows and goats, "jadh‘" refers to the offspring that has completed one year and entered the second year, and for sheep, "jadh‘" is one whose age is one year or slightly less. Regarding cows, some have said that "jadh‘" is one that has entered its third year.

Some scholars have permitted the sacrifice of a six-month-old lamb, but the correct view is that for both sheep and goats, the animal should be adult (dantah huwa) or have completed one year.

Because the hadith states: «لَا تَذْبَحُوْا إِلَّا مُسِنَّةً "You should sacrifice an adult (dantah huwa) animal."
