According to the majority of the scholars, it is obligatory (wajib) for the pilgrim (haji) to spend the nights of the 10th, 11th, and 12th of Dhul-Hijjah in Mina. However, due to illness or a legitimate (shar‘i) excuse, it is permissible to spend the night in Makkah. Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib radi Allahu anhu used to draw and serve Zamzam water to the pilgrims. Due to this reason and cause, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam granted his noble uncle permission to spend those nights in Makkah.
