Hadith 1825

Qatadah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): How many times did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) perform Hajj? He said: He performed Hajj only once, and performed four ‘Umrahs. The first ‘Umrah was when the polytheists prevented him from performing ‘Umrah (i.e., the ‘Umrah of Hudaybiyyah); the second ‘Umrah was when the treaty was made for the following year (i.e., in Dhu al-Qa‘dah, the year after the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah); the third ‘Umrah was when he distributed the spoils of Hunayn in Dhu al-Qa‘dah; and the fourth ‘Umrah he performed along with his Hajj.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Ahadith 1823 to 1825)

From these ahadith, the number of Hajj and Umrah performed by the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is known. After the Hijrah, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed Hajj only once. For the establishment and proof of any issue, it is sufficient that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed an action even once.

And Hajj is obligatory only once in a lifetime; any Hajj performed after that is considered voluntary (nafl). The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed Umrah four times, as has been detailed in the aforementioned hadith. In some narrations, it is mentioned that he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed three Umrahs; they did not count the first Umrah because in that instance, he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam set out from Madinah for Umrah, but the polytheists of Makkah prevented him, and then the following year, after the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed Umrah.
