Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray three rak‘ahs of Witr; in the first rak‘ah he would recite «سَبِّحِاسْمَرَبِّكَالْأَعْلَى», in the second rak‘ah «قُلْيَاأَيُّهَاالْكَافِرُونَ», and in the third rak‘ah «قُلْهُوَاللَّهُأَحَدٌ».

From this hadith, it is understood that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to recite the aforementioned surahs—Al-A‘la, Al-Kafirun, and Al-Ikhlas—in the three rak‘ahs of Witr, which is Sunnah. Occasionally, other surahs may also be recited.
