Hadith 1598

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to always deliver two sermons and would sit between them, and during the sermon he would recite the Qur'an and advise the people.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Ahadith 1596 to 1598)

From these ahadith, delivering the sermon (khutbah) while standing is established, and this is a well-known matter, as is proven by the phrase "and they left you standing" (wa tarakuka qa'iman).

Furthermore, from this hadith, the components of the sermon are understood: the sermon should consist of Qur'an, hadith, and general admonition. Praise (hamd), glorification (thana), sending blessings (salat) upon the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and supplication (du'a) are also among the essential components of the sermon, as established by other authentic ahadith.
