أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، عَنْ الْأَوْزَاعِيِّ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ سَالِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ "صَلَّى بِمِنًى رَكْعَتَيْنِ"، وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ رَكْعَتَيْنِ، وَعُمَرُ رَكْعَتَيْنِ، وَعُثْمَانُ رَكْعَتَيْنِ، صَدْرًا مِنْ إِمَارَتِهِ، ثُمَّ أَتَمَّهَا بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ.
Salim narrated from his father (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both) that I prayed with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), Abu Bakr, and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) at Mina (the Zuhr and Asr prayers shortened) two rak‘ahs each. I also prayed two rak‘ahs with Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) at the beginning of his caliphate, but later he started offering the full prayer.
Brief Explanation

In Mina, performing the four-unit (ruba‘i) prayer as two units (qasr) is correct, and many of the Companions (Sahabah) objected to this action of Sayyiduna ‘Uthman radi Allahu anhu. Several reasons have been mentioned for his completion (itmam) of the prayer.
