Hadith 1513

Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman said: I asked Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) about the night prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so she said: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray thirteen rak‘ahs (units of prayer) at night. He would first pray eight rak‘ahs, then pray Witr, then pray two rak‘ahs sitting, and when he intended to bow (ruku‘), he would stand up and then bow. And he used to pray two rak‘ahs between the call to prayer (adhan) and the commencement (iqamah) of Fajr.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Ahadith 1511 to 1513)

In this narration, the mention is of thirteen rak‘ahs for Tahajjud, and it has already been discussed previously that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would never pray more than eleven rak‘ahs at night. So, it is possible that occasionally the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam may have prayed thirteen rak‘ahs as well. Some scholars have said that in this, the two rak‘ahs of Sunnah of ‘Isha are included. Also, in this narration, there is evidence of praying two rak‘ahs sitting after Witr, even though the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam has prohibited praying after Witr.

Imam Nawawi rahimahullah has mentioned in Sharh Muslim that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did this to demonstrate permissibility. As for praying while sitting, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did this once or twice in his entire life.
