باب مَنْ أَحَقُّ بِالإِمَامَةِ:Chapter: Who has more right to lead the prayer
Hadith 1288

أَخْبَرَنَا عَفَّانُ، حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ، عَنْ قَتَادَةُ، عَنْ أَبِي نَضْرَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: "إِذَا اجْتَمَعَ ثَلَاثَةٌ، فَلْيَؤُمَّهُمْ أَحَدُهُمْ، وَأَحَقُّهُمْ بِالْإِمَامَةِ أَقْرَؤُهُمْ".
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "When three men gather together, then the one among them who has recited (the Qur'an) the most is the most deserving to lead them in prayer."
Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 1286 to 1288)
From this hadith, it is understood that the one who has recited the most Qur’an is most deserving of leading the prayer (imamat).
In [مسلم شريف 672], it is detailed that the one who is the most proficient reciter of the Qur’an should lead the prayer, and if all are equal in this, then the one who has the most knowledge of hadith should lead the prayer. If they are also equal in this, then the one who is foremost in terms of migration (hijrah) should lead the prayer.
And so on.
