The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"For fewer than twenty-five camels, there is one goat for every five. So when they reach twenty-five, there is a one-year-old she-camel (bint makhad), up to thirty-five; and if a bint makhad is not available, a male ibn labun will be taken. Then if they reach thirty-six, there is a two-year-old she-camel (bint labun), up to forty-five. Then if they reach forty-six, there is a three-year-old she-camel (hiqqah), fit for the stallion, up to sixty. Then if they reach sixty-one, there is a four-year-old she-camel (jadha'ah), up to seventy-five. Then if they reach seventy-six, there are two bint labun, up to ninety. Then if they reach ninety-one, there are two hiqqahs, fit for the stallion, up to one hundred and twenty. Then if they exceed one hundred and twenty, for every forty there is one bint labun and for every fifty one hiqqah. And if the ages of the camels do not exactly match what is obligatory in charity, then whoever owes a jadha'ah in charity and does not have a jadha'ah but has a hiqqah, it will be accepted from him, and along with it he shall give two goats, if they are easily available to him, or twenty dirhams. And whoever owes a hiqqah in charity and has nothing but a jadha'ah, it will be accepted from him and the zakah collector will give him back twenty dirhams or two goats. And whoever owes a hiqqah in charity and does not have the charity of a bint labun and has only a hiqqah, it will be accepted from him and the zakah collector will give him back twenty dirhams or two goats. And whoever owes a bint labun in charity and does not have a bint labun but has a bint makhad, it will be accepted from him, and along with it he shall give two goats, if they are easily available to him, or twenty dirhams. And whoever's charity reaches a bint makhad and he has nothing but a male ibn labun, it will be accepted from him and nothing further will be taken with it. And whoever has only four camels, there is nothing due on them unless their owner himself wishes. And in the charity of sheep and goats, when the grazing ones number forty, there is one goat, up to one hundred and twenty. Then if they are more, there are two goats, up to two hundred. Then if there is one more, there are three goats, up to three hundred. Then if they are more, for every hundred there is one goat. And in charity no decrepit animal is to be taken, nor a defective one, nor a breeding he-goat, unless the zakah collector himself wishes. And for fear of the charity, separate property is not to be combined and combined property is not to be separated; and whatever belongs to two partners, they shall settle between themselves equally. And if a man's grazing goats are one short of forty, there is nothing due on them unless their owner himself wishes. And on silver there is one fortieth as zakah; so if the wealth is no more than one hundred and ninety dirhams, there is nothing due on it unless its owner himself wishes."
