Muwatta Malik (Yahya) 274 — on the command for Witr prayer
وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، أَنَّ سَعْدَ بْنَ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ ، " كَانَ يُوتِرُ بَعْدَ الْعَتَمَةِ بِوَاحِدَةٍ " .
قَالَ مَالِك : وَلَيْسَ عَلَى هَذَا الْعَمَلُ عِنْدَنَا وَلَكِنْ أَدْنَى الْوِتْرِ ثَلَاثٌ
قَالَ مَالِك : وَلَيْسَ عَلَى هَذَا الْعَمَلُ عِنْدَنَا وَلَكِنْ أَدْنَى الْوِتْرِ ثَلَاثٌ
It is narrated from Ibn Shihab that Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) used to perform one rak'ah of Witr after the 'Isha prayer.
Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Our practice is not upon this, rather the minimum for Witr is three rak'ahs.
