أخبرني إسماعيل بن محمد بن الفضل، حدَّثنا جدِّي، حدَّثنا إسماعيل بن أبي أُوَيس، حدثني أخي أبو بكر، عن سليمان بن بلال، عن ابن عَجْلان، عن أُمِّه (3)، عن فاطمة بنت عُتبة: أنَّ أبا حذيفة ذهب بها وبأختِها هندِ تُبايعانِ رسولَ الله ﷺ، فلمَّا اشترطَ عليهنَّ قالت هندٌ: أَوَ تعلمُ في نساءِ قومِك من هذه الهَنَاتِ والعاهاتِ شيئًا؟ فقال لها أبو حذيفة: إيهٍ فبايعيهِ، فإنه هكذا يَشترِطُ (1). ذكرُ حَمْنةَ بنت جَحْش، وليست بأختِ زينبَ، هذه غيرُها (2)

It is narrated from Sayyidah Fatimah bint Utbah (may Allah be pleased with her) that Sayyiduna Abu Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) took her and her sister Hind to give the pledge of allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When he (peace and blessings be upon him) took the conditions of the pledge from them, Hind said (in astonishment): "Do you find any trace of these vices and faults among the women of your people?" Abu Hudhayfah said to her: "Just give the pledge quietly, for he (peace and blessings be upon him) takes the pledge on conditions like these."

(3) كذا وقع هنا في النسخ: عن أمه، ويغلب على ظننا أنه تحريف، وأنَّ الصواب: عن أبيه، كما سلف في الرواية (3847). وأبوه العجلان كان مولّى لفاطمة بنت عتبة، وأما أمه فلم نقف لها على ترجمة.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Here in the manuscripts the words "from his mother" occur, but in our most likely estimation this is a distortion and the correct reading is "from his father", as has passed in narration (3847).
Important point: His father "'Ajlan" was the freed slave of Fatimah bint 'Utbah, while we could not find a biography (tarjamah) of his mother.

Grading: In sha' Allah its chain is "hasan", as detailed under hadith no. (3847).
(2) كذا قال الحاكم، والمصنفون في الصحابة كابن سعد وابن عبد البر وابن الأثير وابن حجر، لم يذكروا حمنة بنت جحش غير أخت أمّ المؤمنين زينب، وجميعُهم ذكر أنها كانت زوجة مصعب بن عمير، فقتل عنها، والله تعالى أعلم.
Important point: Imam al-Hakim stated it thus, but the other authors who wrote on the Companions, such as Ibn Sa'd, Ibn 'Abd al-Barr, Ibn al-Athir and Ibn Hajar, mentioned under the name Hamnah bint Jahsh only the sister of the Mother of the Believers Zaynab, and according to all these scholars she was the wife of Mus'ab bin 'Umayr, who was martyred before her.
