Abdul Rahman bin Ishaq narrates from his father, who said: When Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) intended to emigrate to the land of Abyssinia, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Take Ruqayyah with you as well," and he said: "I think that the two of you will remain patient and steadfast with one another." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyidah Asma' bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said: "Bring me news of the two of them." When Asma' returned, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and she said: O Messenger of Allah! Uthman mounted her on a donkey with a saddle-pad and took her towards the sea. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Bakr! These two are the first couple to emigrate (in the way of Allah) after Sayyiduna Lut and Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon them both)."

Grading: Its chain is utterly weak (da'if bi-marrah). Technical note / Defect ('illah): It contains Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi, about whom the criticism of the scholars is well known; his shaykh Salit bin Muslim is "majhul al-hal" (of unknown status) (see Ibn 'Adi's al-Kamil 3/466); and 'Abd al-Rahman bin Ishaq is Ibn 'Abd Allah al-'Amiri al-Madani, and his father Ishaq bin 'Abd Allah narrates from Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas only through an intermediary, so the chain is "munqati'" (broken). And Allah knows best. Important point: We have not found this hadith by this route. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there are narrations from Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) in Ya'qub al-Fasawi's "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh" (3/255), Ibn Abi 'Asim's "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (123) and (2978), and al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (143). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its chain contains Bashshar bin Musa al-Khaffaf, who is "weak", and his shaykh al-Hasan bin Ziyad al-Burjumi, whom we do not know. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: From Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), Ibn 'Adi narrated it in "al-Kamil" (4/243). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its chain contains 'Abd Allah bin Dawud al-Tammar, who is "weak". Corroborating chains and supporting reports: From Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him), al-Dulabi narrated it in "al-Kuna" (1284) and al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (4881). Technical note / Defect ('illah): It contains 'Uthman bin Khalid al-'Uthmani, a "matruk" (abandoned) narrator.
