It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me to my people to call them to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and to present to them the laws of Islam. I reached them at a time when they had watered their camels, milked them, and drunk themselves. When they saw me, they said: Welcome to Sudayy bin Ajlan. Then they said: We have learned that you have joined the religion of this man (Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)). I said: No, rather I have believed in Allah and His Messenger, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has sent me to you to present Islam and its laws to you. While we were in this conversation, they brought a bowl full of blood, set it down, and all gathered around it to eat. They said: O Sudayy, you come too. I said: Woe to you! I have come to you from the one who has forbidden all this to you through what Allah has revealed. They asked: What is that? I said: This verse was revealed to him: "Forbidden to you are carrion, blood and the flesh of swine" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 3]. Then I began inviting them to Islam, but they kept refusing. At last I said to them: Woe to you! Give me a little water, for I am extremely thirsty. They said: No, rather we will let you die of thirst. He relates: I adjusted my turban, covered my head with the turban, and lay down to sleep on the scorching ground in intense heat. In my dream someone came to me with a glass cup more beautiful than any people have ever seen, containing a drink more delicious than any people have ever tasted. He handed the cup to me and I drank it. As soon as I finished drinking, I woke up. By Allah, since drinking that cup I have never felt thirsty, nor have I known the pain of thirst. Then I heard them saying: A man from among the nobles of your people came to you and you did not give him even a sip of diluted milk! Then they brought me a little diluted milk, and I said: I have no need of it; Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has fed me and given me drink. Then I showed them my (full) belly, and they all, to the last one, accepted Islam.

Note / Clarification: (2) In our handwritten manuscripts this name was distorted into "Harim", whereas in the Mahmudiyyah manuscript it has come correctly, as in the al-Mayman edition.
Note / Clarification: (1) This text is established from manuscript (Z), whereas in our other manuscripts it is "bi-madhqatihim". "Al-madhqah" is a drink of milk mixed with water.
Grading: (2) Its chain is layyin (weak). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Ghalib - who is al-Basri, the companion of Abu Umamah - there is disagreement about his name, and he is "layyin al-hadith" (weak), and he is alone in narrating this report. As for Sadaqah bin Hurmuz, Ibn Abi Hatim 4/ 431 transmitted from Ibn Ma'in that he was weak, but he has been corroborated. And Abdullah bin Salamah: no authentication or criticism of him is transmitted from anyone, but a group narrated from him, as in al-Khatib's "Talkhis al-Mutashabih" 1/ 17, so he is "majhul al-hal" (of unknown condition), and he too has been corroborated. Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (8073) from Abdullah bin Ahmad bin Hanbal, with this same chain. Reference / Source: It was narrated by Abu Ya'la, as in "al-Matalib al-Aliyah" (4041) - and through his route Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" 24/ 63 - and by al-Ruyani in his "Musnad" (1184) through the route of Abdullah bin Salamah. Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 6/ 127 - and through his route Ibn Asakir 24/ 63-64 - through the route of Yunus bin Muhammad al-Mu'addib, from Sadaqah bin Hurmuz, with this same chain. Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Abi Asim in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (1234), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (8099), al-Bayhaqi 6/ 126, and Ibn Asakir 24/ 62-63 and 64 through the route of al-Husayn bin Waqid, and by al-Tabarani (8074) and Ibn Asakir 24/ 64-65 through the route of Bashir bin Surayj; both of them (al-Husayn and Bashir) narrate it from Abu Ghalib with this same chain. Note / Clarification: The narrator's word "tamja'uhu" is derived from "al-maj'", which means eating dates with milk; the way of it is that a person takes a sip of milk and immediately after it eats a date.
