Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6848

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zam'ah bin al-Aswad bin al-Muttalib bin Asad (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: When the illness of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (in his final illness) grew severe, and I was with him (peace and blessings be upon him) along with a group of Muslims, Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) called the adhan for the prayer. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell someone to lead the people in prayer." I went out, and there was Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), while Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was not present (at that time). I said: O Umar, stand up and lead the people in prayer. He stood up, and when he said the takbir, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) heard his voice, for Umar was a man with a loud voice. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Where is Abu Bakr? Allah and the Muslims do not approve of this (situation)." Then a message was sent to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and he came after Umar had already led that prayer, and then he led the people in prayer. Abdullah bin Zam'ah relates that Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: Woe to you! O Ibn Zam'ah, what have you done to me? By Allah, when you told me (to lead the prayer), I thought only that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had ordered you to do so; had it not been for that thought, I would never have led the prayer. I replied: By Allah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not order me, but when I did not find Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) there, I considered you the most deserving of those present to lead the people in prayer.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) In the handwritten manuscripts this word was distorted into "istaqarra", and it has been corrected from the sources of takhrij. "Istu'izza" (in the passive form) means: his illness became severe and he came close to death. Ibn al-Athir said this in "al-Nihayah" (root: '-z-z).

Grading: (2) This hadith is da'if (weak) with this wording.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is no harm in the narrators of this chain (la ba'sa bihim), but the preponderant view is that Ibn Ishaq - who is Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Yasar - did not hear it from al-Zuhri, as is explained in the annotation on "Musnad Ahmad" and "Sunan Abi Dawud".
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad (31/ 18906) through the route of Ibrahim bin Sa'd, and by Abu Dawud (4660) through the route of Muhammad bin Salamah; both of them narrate it from Ibn Ishaq with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (4661) also narrated it through the route of Musa bin Ya'qub, from Abd al-Rahman bin Ishaq, from Ibn Shihab, from Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Utbah, that Abdullah bin Zam'ah informed him of this report.
Grading: And Musa bin Ya'qub is weak.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: What is in the two "Sahihs" of al-Bukhari (687) and Muslim (418) is from the hadith of A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent word to Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer. The messenger came to him and said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commands you to lead the people in prayer. Abu Bakr - who was a tender-hearted man - said: O Umar, lead the people in prayer. She said: Umar said: You are more deserving of that. She said: So Abu Bakr led them in prayer during those days."
