It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Harith bin Malik bin al-Barsa' (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say on the day of the Conquest of Makkah: "After this year, Makkah will never be attacked (in a state of disbelief)." Sufyan said in explaining it that what is meant is upon disbelief (that is, there will never again be a need to fight to prevail over it).

(582). Grading: This narration is sahih, but as the hadith of Muti' bin al-Aswad. All the narrators of this chain are thiqah, but there is a disagreement over Zakariyya bin Abi Za'idah in his narration from Imam al-Sha'bi. Zakariyya is one of those who often commit tadlis from al-Sha'bi, and we did not find him explicitly stating that he heard this hadith from him. Technical note / Defect ('illah): In our view the more correct position is that this narration is with the chain of Imam al-Sha'bi, from 'Abd Allah bin Muti', from his father Muti', and Imam Muslim graded this route sahih. In it Zakariyya explicitly states that he heard from al-Sha'bi, in Musnad Ahmad (24/ 15409), especially as 'Abd Allah bin Abi al-Safar corroborated him in it; and al-Sha'bi himself explicitly states that he heard it from 'Abd Allah bin Muti' in Sahih Muslim (1782) and elsewhere. And Allah Most High knows best. Reference / Source: The hadith of Muti' will come with the author (al-Hakim) at number (7919), but his narration there contains only part of it in abridged form. This hadith of Ibn al-Barsa' is also in "Musnad al-Humaydi" (582). Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it (31/ 19019) from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (24/ 15404 and 15405, and 31/ 19020) and Imam al-Tirmidhi (1611) narrated it through various routes from Zakariyya bin Abi Za'idah, and Imam al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan sahih". Important point: The meaning of Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah's words "on disbelief" is that after that day Makkah will not be raided on the grounds that its inhabitants are disbelievers; for al-Bukhari narrated in his "Sahih" (2118) from 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), as a marfu' hadith: "An army will raid the Ka'bah."
