Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6711

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Qays bin Asim al-Minqari (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and when he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw me, I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "This is the chief of the desert-dwellers (the people of the tents)." When I dismounted from my mount and came to him (peace and blessings be upon him), I began to talk with him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! What is the wealth for which no burden or liability will fall on me on account of guests and a large family? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Forty camels are the best wealth, and sixty at the most. Woe to the owners of hundreds of camels, except the one who gives of their milk (in charity), helps with them in times of hardship, lends out their backs for riding, and feeds the qani' (the contented needy person) and the mu'tarr (the one who presents himself asking)." I said: O Prophet of Allah! How noble and beautiful these manners are! O Prophet of Allah! In the valley where I live, no room is left (for anyone else to settle) because of the great number of my camels. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Then what do you do?" I said: My camels go out to graze and the people also reach there; whoever wishes takes hold of the head of a camel and takes it away. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What do you do about lending out their backs?" I said: I do not lend out the young ones or the old she-camel for riding (so that they are not burdened). He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Is your own wealth dearer to you, or the wealth of your heirs?" I said: My own wealth is dearer to me than the wealth of my heirs. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your share of your wealth is only what you have eaten and finished, or worn and made old, or given in the way of Allah and so preserved (for the Hereafter); whatever is besides that belongs to your heirs." I said: By Allah! If I remain alive, I will exhaust the number of these camels (by spending them in the way of Allah). Imam al-Hasan al-Basri says: By Allah! He did just that. Then, when the time of Qays's death drew near, he gave his sons a parting counsel, saying: "Beware of begging (asking from people), for it is the worst earning of a person, and whoever takes the path of asking abandons the earnings of his own labour."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Our manuscripts had "al-mi'atayn" (two hundred), but we have retained the word that agrees with the narration of "al-Adab al-Mufrad" and others.

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts the word here was "bi-kathrah", whereas we corrected it from the Mahmudiyyah manuscript, which agrees with the other sources of takhrij.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts this name was corrupted (by error) to "al-Husayn".

Grading: Overall this hadith is hasan, but this particular chain is da'if because of Ziyad al-Jassas (Ziyad bin Abi Ziyad).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ziyad has been corroborated; and although Imam al-Hasan al-Basri explicitly stated that he heard from Qays, according to Ali bin al-Madini he heard nothing from Qays, as Ibn Abi Hatim reported in "al-Marasil" (143).

Reference / Source: Further takhrij: Ibn Shabbah 2/ 532 - 533, Bahshal in "Tarikh Wasit" p. 119, al-Bazzar (3663 - Kashf al-Astar), Abu Ya'la in "al-Mafarid" (108), al-Tabari in the Musnad of Umar of "Tahdhib al-Athar" 1/ 57 and in the Musnad of Ibn Abbas 1/ 269, al-Baghawi in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (1961), Ibn Hibban in "al-Thiqat" 6/ 320 - 322, Ibn Adi in "al-Kamil" 3/ 187, Abu Tahir al-Mukhallis in "al-Mukhallisiyyat" (1902) and (3015), Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (5684), and al-Mizzi in "Tahdhib al-Kamal" in the biography of Qays bin Asim (24/ 60-62), via Ziyad bin Abi Ziyad al-Jassas.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In some sources the name "Ziyad" has mistakenly become "Yazid".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Its second route was narrated at length by Imam al-Bukhari in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (953), al-Bazzar (2744 - Kashf al-Astar), Ibn al-A'rabi in "al-Mu'jam" (259) and al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (3065), with the chain al-Sa'q bin Hazn, from al-Qasim bin Mutayyab, from Yunus bin Ubayd, from al-Hasan al-Basri.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Qasim bin Mutayyab was mentioned by Imam al-Bukhari and Ibn Abi Hatim, who remained silent about him, while al-Daraqutni declared him thiqah in "al-'Ilal" 5/ 143. Ibn Hibban criticised him harshly, saying that he makes mistakes despite his few narrations and therefore deserves to be abandoned. Our position is that narrators like him are acceptable in corroborating chains and supporting reports.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Its third route was reported by Ibn Abd al-Barr in "al-Tamhid" 4/ 213 via Abd al-Malik bin Qurayb al-Asma'i from al-Mubarak bin Fadalah; al-Mubarak says that he heard this from al-Hasan al-Basri, but he did not cite the full wording.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this chain, some narrators up to al-Asma'i are unidentified.
Grading: Through all these routes combined, this hadith rises to the level of "hasan". And Allah knows best.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabari narrated in the Musnad of Umar 1/ 57, via Ubayd (Ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Sid) from al-Hasan al-Basri from Qays bin Asim al-Minqari, that when death came to him he said to his sons: "O my sons! Beware of begging, for it is the worst earning of a person".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator who narrates from Ubayd could not be identified.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated in "al-Tabaqat" 6/ 162, via Sufyan al-Thawri from Aslam al-Minqari from a man, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said about Qays bin Asim: "This is the chief of the desert dwellers (the people of the tents)".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All of its narrators are thiqah except for the one man whose name is left unspecified.
Note / Clarification: The word "al-mi'in": it is the plural of "mi'ah" (hundred).
Note / Clarification: The phrase "illa man a'ta fi najdatiha wa rislaha": Ibn al-Athir said in "al-Nihayah" 2/ 223 that 'najdah' means hardship and drought, while 'risl' means ease and abundance; because 'risl' is milk, which is plentiful in times of plenty. The meaning is that such a person pays Allah's due in every state, in straitness and in ease, in drought and in abundance. Giving during drought is hard and burdensome, while giving in prosperity is easy. That is why, when the meaning of 'najdah and risl' was asked about in the hadith, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Its hardship and its ease" ('usr and yusr). Thus drought was called 'usr and abundance yusr. So najdah refers to giving the due in straitness and risl to giving it in ease. And Allah knows best.
Note / Clarification: The phrase "fa-innaha akhir kasb al-mar'": Ibn al-Athir said (1/ 29) that it means the most contemptible and lowest earning. It has also been read with a long vowel ("ākhir", last), meaning that begging is a person's very last means of livelihood when he is completely unable to earn.
