Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6671

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Shaddad bin al-Had (may Allah be pleased with him) that a Bedouin believed in the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and followed him, and said: I will emigrate with you. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed his Companions concerning him (to look after him). When the Battle of Khaybar (or Hunayn) took place, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) obtained some spoils of war. He (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed them and set aside that man's share too, and handed that share over to his Companions. The man was at that time grazing their mounts. When he returned, they gave that share to him. He asked: What is this? They said: This is the share which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set aside for you. So he took it and came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! What is this? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is your share which I set aside for you." He said: I did not follow you for this (wealth); rather, I followed you so that I would be struck here (and he pointed to his throat) by an arrow, and die, and enter Paradise. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you are true to Allah, He will be true to you (He will fulfil your wish)." Then they waited a little while, then they rose to fight the enemy. He was brought, being carried, having been struck by an arrow exactly where he had pointed. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Is it him?" The people said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He was true to Allah, so Allah was true to him." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) shrouded him, placed him in front and offered the funeral prayer over him. Among the words of his (peace and blessings be upon him) prayer over him that became audible were these: "O Allah, this is Your servant who went out as an emigrant in Your path and was killed as a martyr, and I am a witness over him."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The word "Ibn" had dropped out of the manuscripts; it has been restored from "Musannaf 'Abd al-Razzaq" and "Ithaf al-Maharah" (6325).
Important point: He is 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abd Allah bin Abi 'Ammar, who was called "al-Qiss" (the devout one) because of his abundant worship.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts the word here has been corrupted into "dahadu".

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: This narration is in "Musannaf 'Abd al-Razzaq" (6651, 9597), and through his route al-Tabarani (al-Kabir 7108) and al-Bayhaqi (al-Sunan 4/ 15 and Dala'il al-Nubuwwah 4/ 221-222) narrated it.
Note / Clarification: The narration of Ahmad bin Yusuf al-Sulami contains the statement of 'Ata' that the funeral prayer was not offered over the martyrs of Uhud, on which Imam al-Bayhaqi commented that this Companion may have remained alive until the fighting ended and died afterwards, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed over him, whereas those who were martyred at Uhud died during the battle itself.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Nasa'i (2091) and al-Tahawi in "Ma'ani al-Athar" 1/ 505-506 recorded it through the chain of 'Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak from Ibn Jurayj.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): According to Imam al-Nasa'i, no one corroborated Ibn al-Mubarak in this wording, and the correct chain is "Ibn Abi 'Ammar from Ibn Shaddad bin al-Had"; since Ibn al-Mubarak is one of the imams, the error must have come from someone else.
Important point: We say: Imam al-Nasa'i did say this, but the fact is that 'Abd al-Razzaq corroborated Ibn al-Mubarak by narrating it from Ibn Jurayj, so this narration is sahih and contains no error. In the narration found with al-Bayhaqi, Ibn Abi 'Ammar stated explicitly that Shaddad bin al-Had told him this hadith, and its chain is sahih.
