(1). It is narrated from Atiyyah that he said: I asked a freed slave of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) how his death came about. He said that Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) strongly condemned the deeds of al-Hajjaj bin Yusuf at the time of the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both). He stood before him and spoke harsh words to him, so al-Hajjaj said: "Be quiet, old man! You have lost your mind." Then, when the people had dispersed, al-Hajjaj ordered a man from Syria, who struck him on the foot with a spear. Then al-Hajjaj came to visit him in his illness and said: "If only I knew who injured you, I would strike off his head." He said: "It is you who injured me." He asked: How so? He said: "Because you brought weapons into the Sanctuary of Allah (whereby its sanctity was violated)."

Grading: Its chain is weak. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason for the weakness is the weakness of 'Atiyyah bin Sa'd al-'Awfi and the fact that the mawla (freed slave) of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) is unnamed. "Abu Nu'aym" in the chain is al-Fadl bin Dukayn. Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani transmitted something similar in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (13039) from 'Ali bin 'Abd al-'Aziz al-Baghawi with this same chain. Likewise Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated it in his "Musannaf" (14624 - 'Awwamah's edition) from Waki', from Fudayl bin Marzuq, with the same chain. Reference / Source: A similar narration (without the mention of al-Hajjaj ordering the killing of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)) was given by Imam al-Bukhari in his "Sahih" (966) via Sa'id bin Jubayr, and (967) via Sa'id bin 'Amr bin Sa'id bin al-'As; both of them reported a report of similar meaning. Note / Clarification: See the narration that follows it.
