حدثنا أبو الحسن محمد بن علي بن بكر المعدَّلُ حَفَدَةُ إبراهيم بن هانئ، حدثنا الحُسين (3) بن الفضل البَجَلي، حدثنا سليمان بن حرب، حدثنا حمّاد ابن زيد، عن عطاء بن السائب قال: قال لي مُحارِب بن دِثَار: هل سمعتَ سعيدَ بن جُبير يَذكُر عن ابن عبّاس في الكَوثَر شيئًا؟ قلت: نعم، قال: هو الخيرُ الكثير، قال: سبحان الله، قلَّ ما يَسقُطُ لابن عبّاس، يقول: سمعتُ ابنَ عمر (4) يقول: لما نزلت ﴿إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَ﴾، قال رسول الله ﷺ: "هو نهرٌ في الجنة، حافَتَاه من ذهبٍ يَجْري على الدُّرِّ والياقُوت، شرابه أشدُّ بياضًا من اللَّبَن، وأَحلى من العَسَل"، فقال: صَدَقَ واللهِ ابنُ عبّاس، هذا والله الخيرُ الكثير (5).

Muharib bin Dithar asked Ata bin al-Sa'ib: Have you heard Sa'id bin Jubayr relate anything from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about al-Kawthar? I said: Yes; he told that it means "abundant good" (al-khayr al-kathir). At this he said: Subhan Allah! Ibn Abbas rarely errs in anything he says. He (Sa'id) says: I heard Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) say that when the verse "Indeed, We have given you al-Kawthar" [Surah al-Kawthar: 1] was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is a river in Paradise whose two banks are of gold; it flows over pearls and rubies; its water is whiter than milk and sweeter than honey." Then he said: By Allah, Ibn Abbas spoke the truth; this is indeed the real "abundant good."
This hadith has an authentic chain (sahih al-isnad), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

(3) تحرَّف في النسخ الخطية إلى: الحَسن، وقد جاء على الصواب في عشرات المواضع من هذا الكتاب.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts the word here has been distorted into "al-Hasan", while in dozens of other places in this book it is written correctly.
(4) هكذا في نسخنا الخطية: "يقول" بياء في أوله والعبارة في "مسند أحمد": ما أقل ما يسقط لابن عبّاس قولٌ، سمعت ابن عمر. وهي أوجهُ.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Our manuscripts have "yaqul" (with a ya' at the start), but the wording in Musnad Ahmad is clearer and better, where the words are: "Rarely does any statement of Ibn 'Abbas miss the mark; I heard (this from) Ibn 'Umar."
(5) إسناده صحيح. وأخرجه أحمد 10/ (5913) عن مؤمل بن إسماعيل، عن حماد بن زيد بهذا الإسناد.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it at (10/ 5913) through Mu'ammal bin Isma'il, from Hammad bin Zayd, with this same chain.
وسلفت رواية سعيد بن جبير عن ابن عبّاس مختصرة برقم (4023).
Important point: The abridged narration of Sa'id bin Jubayr from Ibn 'Abbas has already passed at number (4023).
